Roughly 50 automobiles have been smeared with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.
Vehicles, building surfaces and postal boxes were vandalized, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they stated in a release.
Officers say they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a resident discovered that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish substance.
The liquid had been applied in the form of a swastika, they reported.
Law enforcement then located multiple other smeared cars and residential walls in the nearby vicinity.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.
Officials state preliminary tests indicate the fluid was probably blood from a person.
"At present there remains no clue as to its origin; investigators are not yet informed of any injuries in relation with the event," they commented.
Local authorities said they were trying "to resolve the incident" and have appealed to the residents for information.
An important official said the vandalism left him stunned and had to be solved quickly.
"This event hits the core of Hanau and revives the trauma of the right-wing terrorist attack five years ago," he posted on social media, mentioning the murder of nine individuals by a shooter targeting residents of migrant background in February 2020.
